Navy cruiser USS Augusta, commanded by Admiral Alan G. Kirk. The ship took an active part in support of the Normandy D-Day landings, and the author, along with General Omar Bradley, was able to tour the beaches, villages, and countryside immediately after the first-wave of the invasion. Prior to the June 6th invasion, Brown describes his activities in England, the effects of the war on its people, and the morale of the waiting soldiers.

Included are 64 pages of photographs by U.S. Navy photographers. John Mason Brown (1900-1969), in addition to his books, was a drama critic in New York- his literary knowledge is evident in the writing style of the book, somewhat different than that of a war correspondent. However, his first hand descriptions of the invasion and its aftermath are first-rate.
